Types of Printers

Printers fall into three large families depending on the printing technology they use.

Inkjet Printers

The cost of inkjet printers is lower than laser ones, but the prices of cartridges are not very low and they run out quickly enough if you print a lot of photos. The market also offers color laser printers, but also in this case they are ideal only for printing text documents, presentations or files with many graphic elements, such as flyers, brochures and so on. Not much used are printers that use a new technology called LED, which is a valid alternative to lasers.

Ink Tank Printers

Ink tank printers are modified inkjet printers. They use a refillable tank system and ink bottles to handle printing duties. Ink tank printers have an inbuilt mechanism of supplying continuous ink, which helps lower the cost of printing. Filling up the tanks with ink is really simple too. Most models have the tanks built outside the printer’s chassis.

Laser Printers

The models that use the laser printing system are ideal for those who need to print text documents. They are much faster and cheaper, in terms of consumables than inkjet and ink tank printers. On the contrary, the latter is suitable for those who print many photos, or in any case, do not need to produce a large number of text documents.

3D Printers

3D printers are a type of printer that can create three-dimensional objects. These printers work by depositing layers of material, usually plastic or metal, one on top of the other to create an object. 3D printing is often used in manufacturing and prototyping applications because it allows for the creation of complex shapes that would be difficult or impossible to create using traditional manufacturing methods. To know more about this printer, take a look at our article on best 3D printer in India.

Wireless Printers

A wireless printer is a type of printer that uses a wireless connection to print documents and photos. Wireless printers are becoming increasingly popular as more and more devices, such as laptops, smartphones, and tablets, are able to connect to the internet without the need for a physical cable connection. Wireless printers can be connected to a home or office network using a wireless router, or they can be connected directly to a computer or mobile device using a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection. In our article about the best wireless printers in India, we’ve reviewed the top models worth buying.

Printer Buying Guide

When it comes to printers, the first big decision you need to make is closely related to the type of file you are going to transfer to paper. This is because there are different types of devices of this type, some more suitable for printing in black and white, others in color.

Below, you will find a guide in which we will tell you about the different aspects to be taken into account when choosing a printer.

Single Function or Multi-functional

When you are going to buy a new printer, whether laser or inkjet, you can also consider the so-called multi-function models. In addition to offering the ability to print, these devices also allow you to scan, photocopy, and some even send faxes. The costs of MFPs compared to classic printers are not that high. For this reason, many users prefer to opt for multi-functional printers, especially for home.

Print performance

The first factor that should be considered when evaluating a printer is the one concerning printing performance, that is to say the technical specifications strictly linked to the results that the machine allows to achieve.

These include data such as the maximum print resolution, the number of pages each cartridge allows you to print, the print speed, the ability to print on both sides and others.

Of course, everyone’s needs are different, and those who need a printer for professional or office use will certainly need a different machine from those looking for a small printer for home use.

Below we try to explain each of these technical characteristics by giving you an idea of which values are indicated for which need.

Print resolution

This technical specification is the one that determines the sharpness of images and printed text.

It is particularly relevant for those who need to print photos or documents rich in images, or high-quality text documents. The print resolution is expressed in DPI, an acronym for Dots Per Inch, or points per inch, and indicates the number of ink points contained in a stretch exactly one inch (2.54 cm) long. The higher the number of DPI, the greater the level of detail that the printer will be able to reproduce.

To give you some reference, just think that an inkjet printer for photo printing reaches a resolution of 9600 x 2400 DPI, while a small printer for home use usually reaches 1200 x 1200 DPI, which is to be considered a good intermediate value.

Print speed

This specification is particularly important to consider for those who need to print many documents very often, and therefore need a printer that is efficient in terms of working times.

There are two things that it is important to evaluate when it comes to print speed. On the one hand, the time required for the production of the first page, then the interval that passes from the moment in which the print is confirmed until the first page is ready. On the other hand, we must also consider the number of pages that the printer can produce in the standard unit of one minute.

This data is related to the print resolution: the higher the selected resolution, the slower the printing. Keep in mind that a simple home printer can take between 15 and 20 seconds to print the first page and produce up to twenty pages per minute by printing low resolution black and white documents. On the contrary, printers designed for more professional uses exceed 30 pages per minute even when printing in color and produce the first page in 8 seconds or less.

Colors

A very important consideration for those looking for a printer capable of perfectly reproducing their photographs or other images is undoubtedly the number of colors used for printing.

The majority of printers, in particular those for domestic use, print in full color, imprinting on the page inks of four colors: black, magenta, cyan and yellow. However, models capable of printing in hexachrome are also spreading, in which, to the four colors just mentioned, we also add either light magenta and light cyan, or green and orange.

The addition to the two further colored inks allows to better cover the color range: the hexachromatic print with orange and green allows a better rendering of bright colors, such as electric blue or fluorescent colors, which instead are always a bit “off” in the four-color prints, while the presence of light cyan and light magenta allows a better rendering of shades, at least as regards low saturation colors (less bright).

In computer jargon there are three abbreviations that allow you to understand which number of inks and which colors the printer supports:

  • CMYK: The four letters of this acronym stand for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black, or the four colors of the four-color print (cyan, magenta, yellow and black)
  • CMYKOG: In this case the first four letters always indicate the four “basic” colors, while the final O and G stand for Orange and Green, or orange and green
  • CcMmYK: In this case the capital letters always indicate the four colors of the four-color printing, while the lowercase m and M stand for light cyan and light magenta

Print on both sides

It is possible to print on the front and back of each sheet with any printer, but there are models that allow this mode of printing automatically instead of manually.

The presence of this option can be very convenient for those who need to print documents of different pages and / or want to save on paper. Automatic two-sided printing, or duplex, does not require the user to take any action beyond the launch of the print, while with printers without this option, those who want to print two-sided will have to do it by hand, printing a sheet to time and taking care to turn and reload each sheet.

Number of prints per cartridge

It is very important to also consider the indicative number of prints that each ink cartridge will allow you to make. This will allow you not only to get an idea of what the maintenance costs of the printer will be, but also if it is actually commensurate with the your needs (if you print a lot you will want a printer whose cartridges should not be changed every two weeks).

In this sense, the differences between compact home and office printers, for high print volumes, are abysmal: a home printer rarely mounts cartridges with more than 400 pages, while professional printers can produce even more than 5000 prints without the need to change cartridges.

Paper management

No less important to consider is all that concerns the formats and print media that a printer can handle. Also, in this case the individual needs can be very different, and you must therefore choose carefully. Let’s see immediately what are the aspects to consider.

Formats

Firstly, it is important to verify that the printer you want to buy actually supports the paper formats that interest us. Practically all printers support the traditional A4 format, in addition to a series of smaller formats, such as the envelope format and the borderless photographic format.

If for professional or other needs you need a printer that also supports A3 or higher format, it is necessary to inquire well with the purchase. In the presence of particular needs, the purchase of an A3 + printer can be indicated, which supports only large formats.

Weight of the paper

In the same way, those who want to print on fine papers, cardstock or other media (such as CDs or DVDs) will have to make sure that they buy a printer suitable for handling heavy-weight papers.

If the normal sheets of A4 paper are in fact rather light, with a typical weight of 64 g / m², the photographic paper can reach 300 g / m². The card has weights ranging from 120 g / m² and up.

A good home printer manages paper and cardboard weighing between 64 and 300 g / m², like office printers, which however often have the advantage of being able to handle materials other than paper as well.

WeightUse
> 100 g / m²Text documents, photocopies
100-120 g / m²  Letters, brochures, office paper
120-170 g / m²Flyers, posters, brochures
170-200 g / m²Flyers, brochures, covers
200-250 g / m²Postcards
250-300 g / m²Business cards, covers
> 300 g / m²Business cards, covers

Loading the sheets

The method of loading the sheets is also important to consider, in particular for those who have to print on thick, precious paper or cardboard.

The top-loading system, in fact, has the greatest advantages precisely with these types of support, since it does not force the pages to make an “elbow” curve between the printer gears.

For this reason, especially with heavy-weight papers, top-loading printers present a lower risk of jamming.

Number of drawers

Finally, for some particular needs it can be very convenient to have multiple paper loading drawers available, for example because you frequently print on different formats. This eliminates the need to replace the paper every time you want to change format.

This may be the case in some offices where A4 and A3 documents, or A4 and envelope format, or A4 and photographic format are frequently printed.

Ports and connections

A further factor worthy of attention is that concerning the connectivity of a printer, namely the ways in which it can be connected to a computer or other devices, as well as the number and type of inputs with which it is equipped, which determines the media that the printer will be able to read and from which it can print, if necessary, even without the support of a connected computer.

Let’s look at these two aspects separately.

Connectivity

It is, as we said, to consider how the printer can be connected not only to our computer, but also possibly to other devices, such as a tablet, a smartphone or the home router (in case you want to use web services, of which we’ll talk later).

As an indication, it is always possible to connect the printer to the computer via a USB cable, or to the router via a network cable, but more and more models now also provide the possibility of establishing a Wi-Fi connection, i.e. wireless. This is helpful in reducing the number of cables that must be connected to the computer. It also allows greater freedom in placing the printer even at a certain distance from the computer, if there is not enough space in the immediate vicinity or if you need to place a shared printer in a large office.

In many models it is also possible to find additional wireless connection systems, such as Bluetooth technology, which allows connection to enabled smartphones and tablets, from which it will then be possible to access the printer and use it. Some models also allow NFC connection with mobile devices equipped with Android or Windows operating system, or with the latest iPhone models.

USB Ports and card slots

Beyond the Ethernet and USB ports intended for connection with the computer or router, it is certainly interesting to consider whether a printer is equipped with additional USB ports that allow you to read and print data directly from a USB stick or from an external memory, so you can print without having to turn on the computer.

For the same reason it may be interesting to consider the presence or absence of a slot for inserting SD cards, in particular for photo printing.

Convenience of use

Among the aspects less related to printer performance, we suggest considering some that have to do with the location of the machine in the home or office.

Let’s see in detail the most important:

Dimensions

Depending on the spaces you have available, you may need a particularly compact machine, or one that falls within certain dimensions (width, height, length)

Positioning of the trays

For the same reason the positioning of the paper loading and storage trays could be relevant. In many cases, the most compact printers are equipped with trays that protrude from the machine body, either horizontally from the front of the machine, or vertically and horizontally in the cases of machines with top loading. It will therefore be necessary to consider this aspect too, so that the trays of the chosen printer can always be reached, both for loading the paper and for recovering the printed sheets.

Integrated drawers

In the case of especially larger printers, on the other hand, paper is often loaded from special drawers integrated in the machine body, thus eliminating at least one of the “protrusions” characteristics of the smaller machines. In any case, it is also advisable to make sure that the drawers can always be opened completely to load new sheets

Display

Another noteworthy feature may be the presence or absence of a display on the body of the printer, in particular on those that allow you to print files contained on USB sticks, external memories or SD cards, without having to turn on the computer. This is a characteristic of medium or high-end printers, not usually belonging to the ultra-compact family. Through the display it is usually possible to select the paper sizes, the print source and a variable number of the settings normally present on the control panel accessible from the computer

Functions and services

It may be also worth considering the additional functions of the printer, that is those not strictly concerning printing, and the services included with the purchase of the machine.

Extra functions

Among the functions most commonly found on printers we note in particular the presence of “ecological” or energy-saving operating modes, customizable by the user, which allow you to program the standby and automatic shutdown of the printer after a period of inactivity. It is no longer necessary to worry about turning off the printer after use and you can have the peace of mind that, even if you forget it on, it will turn off by itself after a certain period.

Cloud printing: AirPrint and Google Cloud Print

Among the services offered by the manufacturer with the purchase of a printer there are more and more online features that can be particularly interesting for more “mobile” users who are more attentive to new technologies.

For example, we cannot fail to mention the increasingly widespread possibility of printing documents through AirPrint or Google Cloud Print, the cloud printing services respectively from Apple and Google, which may be of particular interest to those who use only Apple technologies (smartphones, tablets and computers synchronized with each other) or only Android systems.

Cloud services

Some manufacturers instead offer their own cloud service, usually with limited space available, which the user can use for free simply by registering for the service.

In many cases it is also possible to synchronize the printer with additional cloud storage services such as Dropbox or Evernote, to print the files stored there by any device on which these applications are installed, or by accessing the services via web browser.

In many cases, it is also possible to access the printer interface through a normal web browser, to check the status from any fixed or mobile location and, if desired, to launch printing even when you are not at home or in the office.

Scanner performance

A multifunction printer is characterized by having a scanner integrated in the machine body, which the user can use both, precisely, as a scanner for digitizing paper documents, and as a photocopier to reproduce documents. In general, the scanners integrated on multifunction printers are of medium quality, that is, equipped with a good resolution and, in some cases, with an automatic feeder (ADF), a device that allows the scanner to work autonomously, without the need to insert manually the pages to be scanned one at a time.

Let’s see what are the parameters that must be considered to make sure that the performance of the multifunction printer scanner you are evaluating is adequate for your needs.

Resolution

As for resolution, the scanner that you find integrated on the multifunction printer is generally capable of medium quality performance which is more than enough for a detailed scan of text documents, which in fact you can easily reproduce at low resolution (600 DPI or less) without lose in readability.

In general, the performance on photographs and images is also good, even if those with more specific needs, for example, scanning slides, negatives and films in general, will hardly be able to obtain good results without using a special scanner.

The resolution that you will find supported will very often be 1200 x 1200 DPI, or sometimes 1200 x 2400 DPI on some higher end models.

Speed

Talking about speed in reference to a scanner means taking into consideration the number of scans it can perform within a minute. Both of these specifications change, of course, based on the scan resolution, the presence or absence of an automatic feeder and also on the basis of use: as a scanner or as a copier.

Indicatively, the number of scans per minute, depending on the resolution and the presence of an automatic feeder, will oscillate between 10 and 25, while the number of photocopies produced in the same period of time will generally be higher, around 30 at minute.

Frequently Asked Questions About Printers – FAQs

What should I do when the printer is offline?

It is necessary to first check the type of connection of the printer, i.e. with USB cable or Wi-Fi. If the connection is via USB cable, check that the printer is connected correctly.

If you stay offline, the problem may arise from the energy saving function, to avoid wasting energy. It may also be necessary to reinstall the printer driver, because the device is not always recognized automatically by the PC system.

Finally, the printer may be offline due to computer security issues. In this case, just search for the item “Printer properties” and allow its use. Instead, if the connection is Wi-Fi and the printer is offline, it is first necessary to make sure that the status of the device is “online”.

The printer must therefore recognize the PC connection and connect automatically. If error messages appear, turn off the printer and, if necessary, set the connection password and IP address again.

How to connect the printer to the PC?

The printer can be connected to the PC via USB connection or Wi-Fi. The simplest method in both cases is to insert the printer installation CD into the DVD / CD player of the computer. All devices of this type are in fact sold with a special driver.

If, however, the PC is not equipped with a DVD player, you can proceed by looking for the printer driver directly from the official website of the manufacturer. Once the driver is installed, the PC system will recognize the new device and you can start printing everything you need.

How to scan a document with the printer?

The procedure is simple but varies slightly depending on the operating system of the PC operating. If you use Windows, before scanning the document, you need to make sure that the drivers are installed correctly. Place the document in the scanner and proceed with the operation.

The same goes for the iOS operating system, but this time it is necessary to open the “system preferences” item and click on the “print and scanner” icon. Insert the sheet in the scanner and in a few seconds, you will receive your document.

In both cases it is possible to choose the shades of gray and black, together with the quality of the scan, to obtain clear and legible sheets.

How to print from mobile phone to printer?

The easiest way to scan documents, from smartphone to printer, is to turn your PC into a Print server. The computer thus becomes the medium that allows the connection between the mobile phone and the printer.

For Android systems just download Google Cloud Print, while for iOS there is AirPrint. The computer must be online and connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the smartphone. The same procedure for both operating systems can also be carried out by connecting the smartphone to the printer via USB cable.

How to connect a printer to Wi-Fi?

Modern printers are almost always equipped with integrated Wi-Fi technology, which allows you to connect them to PCs, smartphones and tablets without the need to use a USB cable. Printers of this type are recognized immediately by the PC and the driver is installed automatically.

A different method must be followed for smartphones and tablets with iOS or Android operating systems. In this case it is necessary to download apps created specifically to allow connection from these devices to your printer.

How to reset a Canon Pixma printer?

If you want to restore your Canon Pixma printer to its original settings, there is probably something wrong that leads you to make this decision. The first advice we can give you is to update the drivers, checking all those possible for your model on the company’s website.

If this method does not work, fortunately there is Canon’s program, My Printer, which allows you to make an in-depth analysis of the malfunctions, to understand what is wrong. Within this application there is also the “Troubleshoot” button, by clicking which you can solve the catch.

A slightly more aggressive solution, but decisive if you are unable to fix the situation with the methods we have proposed, is to reset the printer via its display. Select the “Settings” function from the menu, then “Device settings”, then “Reset setting”.

This action will return to the initial settings of the printer, as if it had just left the factory.

How to reset an Epson printer?

It may happen that the Epson printer in your possession creates problems or operates intermittently. If you have really tried everything to make it active again but nothing works, you will have to reset it, in order to bring it to its original condition.

First of all, turn off the printer, disconnect it from the power and any other device to which it is connected. Once this is done, insert the socket back into the plug, turn on the device and simultaneously press the Ink and Paper buttons. When the light on Paper turns on, release the two buttons and immediately press Ink again for about ten seconds.

After that release the second button also. The product should return to normal operation, so you can use this method even if you don’t know how to unlock an Epson printer. Another way to act is to go to display, select Setup menu and then Restore Default Settings, to restore the factory settings.
