If you want to beat the summer heat without breaking the bank, a window air conditioner is a great solution. The window air conditioner offers an efficient and convenient means to cool any room in your home.

Properly maintaining your air conditioner will not only improve its efficiency and reduce energy consumption, but also prevent costly repairs and downtime.

Since hiring a professional air-conditioner service or checkup can cost you a lot of money, you can do some simple maintenance yourself at the beginning and the end of the air-conditioning season.

How To Service Your Window AC Yourself – An Easy DIY Guide

Follow these do-it-yourself servicing steps to stay cool all summer long. Before performing any maintenance or repair work, be sure to review your air conditioner’s owner’s manual for instructions.

How To Service Your Window AC Yourself Step 1 - Switch of the air conditioner & disconnect it from its power source

Step 1 — Switch of the air conditioner & disconnect it from its power source

First, switch off the main electricity current to the air conditioner and locate the capacitor. Capacitors store electricity, even when the power to the unit is turned off. Before you do any work on the air conditioner, unplug it and discharge the capacitor. The unit’s owner’s manual will show the location of capacitors and tell how to discharge them. If you want, you can also remove the front access cover and take out the air conditioning unit from its mounting frame.

Step 2 – Clean the air filter

On most models, the filter is easily accessible by removing the front panel. Remove the filter and clean it gently with a combination of warm water and liquid soap, detergent or white vinegar. Let the filter air dry completely before reinstalling it. These should be cleaned once per month during the cooling season. If you have pets or allergies, consider cleaning it more frequently. If the filter has tears, holes or any other damage, replace it.

Step 3 – Clean the evaporator and condenser coils

Clean the evaporator and condenser coils at the beginning of the cooling season and every month during the season. In order to access the coils, you will need to remove the air conditioner cabinet completely. Thoroughly clean them with a vacuum cleaner or by using water and a soft bristle brush. You can also use liquid soap or detergent if required. Check the condenser coil for bent cooling fins. Straighten them with a coil fin comb.

Step 4 – Clean the water pan

To prevent the growth of mildew and a moldy odor in the air, use warm water, dish detergent or white vinegar to clean the inside base of the unit. Dry it with a rag or sponge as needed.

Step 5 – Let the unit dry completely and reinstall it

Once you’re done with the cleaning, let the unit dry completely and reinstall it. Replace the unit into its frame, reinstall the front cover and plug in the unit to its power source.

Conclusion

Just like any other appliance in your place, the window air conditioner also needs a lot of tender love and care to continue working efficiently. Make sure to give it a thorough cleaning at least twice a year.
