Why is using an epilator a good idea?

An electric hair removal tool has several advantages over other hair removal methods, regardless of whether they are professional or amateur. The most obvious are the convenience of being able to shave without leaving home and the speed that follows: you won’t have to waste time moving around or making appointments. However, there is more, so pay attention:

Simplicity

Electric epilators are actually simpler to use. You will not have to learn how to use them as their use is very intuitive. Even an amateur will be able to shave without any risk.

Less irritation

Unlike other methods, such as wax, shaving and depilatory creams, electric hair removal has no effect on the skin and does not irritate it, as the tool hooks the hairs and pulls them from the base. It can be painful, but it won’t leave any marks.

Economic

Epilators cost between Rs. 2000 and Rs. 8000 depending on the model. This is not a cheap product, but once you buy it, you won’t have to think about anything else! No more visiting the beautician, no more razor blades or wax.

Quickness

An electric epilator allows you to save time in two ways: on the one hand you will not have to travel to go to the beautician, on the other hand, the hair will take longer to grow, so you will not have to shave again for quite some time.

Practicality

Most epilators are very small in size, so you can take them with you in case you don’t have time to shave at home. In addition, almost all models include a special carrying bag.

Less waste

Razor blades, like wax, produce waste, as they are disposable plastic tools. If you are an environmentally conscious person, the electric epilator will be the ideal option for you.

8 Decisive factors for choosing the epilator – Epilator Buying Guide

Although epilators may appear, at first glance, all the same, in reality they can vary a lot from each other, both in terms of performance and quality. Nobody likes to make mistakes, so we have selected some basic criteria that you will need to consider in order to buy an epilator that suits your needs:

1. Epilation head

When choosing an epilator it is important to understand what we should expect from the epilating head. This is equipped with tweezers that have the ability to eradicate the hair from the root, recalling the effect that would be obtained with a classic wax.

The difference with the latter consists in the fact that the epilating head pulls out the hair a little at a time and in sections.

The number of tweezers of the epilation head varies according to the epilator, affects the speed of execution of the epilation (in terms of time) and, in part, the discomfort that can be felt when weeding the hair.

Clearly, a head with fewer tweezers may be less invasive as it will remove fewer hairs but, on the other hand, epilation will certainly take longer. For example, an epilating head designed specifically for the removal of facial hair has an extremely reduced number of tweezers, thanks to which pain and discomfort will be minimized.

The tweezers vary from about 20 to 40 and, moreover, they can also change in length and, above all, in shape. There are Y-shaped tweezers or parallel tweezers. The Y-shape and a longer length of the tweezers, theoretically, allow to better channel the hair and facilitate its grip for extraction.

Some models have a head that includes, between one tweezer and another, plastic structures, similar to discs, which serve to channel the hair towards the tweezers themselves, in order to allow a more effective removal from the first use.

The head can also vary according to the materials of which the tweezers are made, which can be ceramic or metal. Metal tweezers are more effective, because they are able to trap hair better, but ceramic ones have the advantage of not overheating during use and of being nickel-free.

2. Accessories

Depending on the quantity and type of accessories an epilator is equipped with, not only the price range in which it is inserted varies, but also its versatility.

There are different types of accessories and each one allows to realize a specific function. Here is a list of all the existing accessories:

Razor head

This head allows you to shave (not eradicate) the hair. This could be an advantage if you decide to shave rather than epilate certain areas of the body, perhaps due to a preference linked to the limited time available or the discomfort of epilation in certain areas.

Trimmer (or comb)

The trimmer is suitable to refine sensitive areas, especially that of the pubis, or to shorten the hair before proceeding to the actual epilation phase.

Heads for face, bikini and armpits

These heads have the characteristic of reducing the area of hair removal. This means that fewer hairs will be extracted on the most sensitive areas, reducing the feeling of discomfort due to epilation itself.

Reducers

Some models are not equipped with real interchangeable heads but with accessories that reduce the hair removal surface and allow you to perform the job with precision even in areas that are difficult to treat with precision, such as the face or the bikini area.

Exfoliating heads

Many brands combine epilators with heads to exfoliate the skin that help eliminate that first layer of dry or dead skin and partially prevent the formation of ingrown hair, carrying out an action similar to a scrub. They exist both for the face and for the body.

Accessories to reduce discomfort

Often, along with the epilator, cooling gloves and / or wipes, massage rollers, or spheres on the head are included, which help to stretch the skin and lift the hair to facilitate extraction to reduce a little, the pain or discomfort caused by the hair removal operation

Cleaning brush

This tool is suitable for cleaning the epilator even in the most difficult to reach crevices and removing any residual hair or dust.

Clutch bag to store the epilator

The presence of this accessory is important to take into account in case of travel, frequent transport or even just to avoid having it scattered around the bathroom and instead have a case to store it more practically.

3. Functions

The epilators differ among themselves especially for the amount of features of which they may be equipped. Obviously, the weight attributed to these characteristics becomes more or less influential in the choice of an epilator, especially according to your needs.

Among the most relevant, we could certainly consider the Wet & Dry function, since many prefer to be able to use the epilator even in the shower.

Another important function is the selection of the speed. Based on your experience and your own tolerance of the annoyance you can choose two rotation speeds for the tweezers in action. In general, all these functions have been designed to be able to improve the user experience of the first (but not only) epilation. Let’s see them in detail below:

The selectable speeds

They indicate how fast the epilation head turns in relation to the work done by the motor. Epilators can have a maximum of two speeds, I and II; some models include only one, while others include both. In particular, speed I is for those who are beginners or for those who can hardly bear pain and have delicate skin. Speed 2 is perfect for those who are now used to the discomfort and want to shave in less time.

The presence of a light

The epilators that include this function have a light present on the machine body to illuminate the skin and identify even the smallest and finest hairs

The Wet & Dry function

The latter helps you to keep the bathroom clean, allowing you to epilate in the shower or immersed in the bathtub and preventing the hair from spreading around. It further reduces the discomfort due to epilation as hot water opens the pores of the skin, thereby facilitating the extraction of the hair. It must be said that this mode is linked to the autonomy of the battery.

The battery charge indicator

In the case of cordless epilators with rechargeable batteries, some models are equipped with a light that provide information on the state of charge. It signals when the device is about to turn off and needs to be recharged.

4. Power supply

There are two types of epilators on the market. Those that are mains powered (corded) and those that have an internal battery (cordless). What you have to keep in mind is that the models with internal rechargeable battery hardly work on mains.

If the model chosen works with an internal rechargeable battery, you will need to follow the instructions on how to recharge it in order to prevent the performance from decreasing over time.

Depending on the type of battery (whether NiMH or Lithium), the performance over time will be different. The best are those with Lithium ions which are not affected by the memory effect unlike NiMH. The higher the performance of the battery, the faster the recharge and the autonomy of the epilator will be, which for most models is a maximum of 30-40 minutes with an hour needed for a full charge.

This implies that, if the autonomy of the epilator is not sufficient to remove the hair from all the areas of the body, you will have to wait for the battery to recharge.

Cordless epilators are therefore not suitable for those who take more than half an hour for complete hair removal.

Corded epilators are not bound by the autonomy of the epilator battery and to the recharge times, allowing you to carry out epilation continuously. It must be said that the corded epilators are perfect if you are not looking for a model that can also be used in the shower or in the bathtub. Also, the cord can make it difficult to use on areas like the back of the thighs or the groin.

5. Structure

Another important thing to evaluate is the handling and ease of use of the chosen epilator. We are talking about ergonomics and ease in cleaning and / or disassembling the accessory parts (the heads, for example) of the epilator.

The body should be quite small and easy to grip, perhaps slightly arched where the hands will grip and, possibly, non-slip, especially for Wet & Dry models. To facilitate use, many epilators also have accessory heads or attached accessory caps, which follow the contours of the body allowing the epilator to adapt to the area to be treated and increase epilation efficiency.

The special epilator for areas that require particular precision, such as the face, should have a particularly manageable structure and a handle that allows you to move it easily.

6. Material

As mentioned previously, electric epilators are mainly made of plastic. What really differentiates them, apart from the details in the design and the nature of the construction materials of the tweezers that you can find on the epilation head, is the robustness of the materials used.

In fact, it is on the quality of these that the longevity of your epilator will depend, especially if you use it frequently. Other things like the quality of the buttons, cord, etc. should also be considered.

The material is also important based on the specific needs of the person who will use the epilator. If, for example, you have a particularly sensitive or allergy-prone skin, it is better to opt for a model that includes a head with totally ceramic tweezers and avoid those which use metal alloys.

7. Brand

Usually the best known brands are those whose reliability is known and allow you to be safer in case of assistance and malfunctions, spare parts and online sales.

Furthermore, the most sought-after brands are those that offer a greater number of information to users by making available online instruction booklets, videos and specifying in particular the wide range of products they offer, allowing you to make a clear comparison between the various models and understand which one is the most suitable for your needs.

In short, they are an extra guarantee in addition to the quality of the object itself. Among the best known brands in the world of hair removal, Braun stands out as a leader with its Silk Epil series, whose epilators are so famous that often, the name Sikl Epil is used as a generic term to refer to epilators. Philips and Remington are also popular.

8. Price

There are many epilator models, ranging from basic models priced from about Rs. 2,000 to multi-accessory ones that can cost around Rs. 8000. What is important to understand is the difference between these models and what affects such a price change.

It is normal that a cheap electric epilator, with a very low price, will certainly have a lower quality than one with a higher price. The price goes hand in hand with the quality of production materials, finishes, internal rechargeable batteries and solidity of the components as well as the accessories present.

The cheapest epilators are only able to epilate and do not include any accessories supplied, while the more expensive ones have not only rich accessory kits (think of the countless interchangeable heads, the travel case or the cleaning brush), but also additional functions and features (such as wet & dry, the presence of light, a greater number of tweezers and two settable speeds).

If you want to aim for a product that is durable over time, the advice is to rely on the leaders in the sector and invest a sum of money that will not disappoint you in the long term instead of aiming for economic models.

Conclusion

After long hours of research and a careful comparison of about fifteen renowned models, we have identified the best electric hair removers of the moment. Among these, the Braun Silk-épil 3 stands out in particular for its excellent quality / price ratio.

Equipped with 20 tweezers, a pressure sensor and two speed settings, it can be used dry or in the shower. Moreover, the extraordinary autonomy and the numerous accessories make it a precious ally in the beauty routine of beginners and experts.

We hope this article was helpful to you. If you still don’t know whether to buy an electric epilator or not, remember that these are very practical and inexpensive devices, and that the hair can take weeks to grow back. Surely it is a painful practice – even if totally bearable. However, the results are gratifying.

Frequently Asked Questions About Epilators

Electric hair removal is not exactly new in the beauty industry. It has been practiced for several decades. Despite this, there are people who have never tried it or who are taking their first steps in this world. For this reason, below we try to solve the most common doubts about epilators.

Is using an epilator painful?

To answer this question it is necessary to start from the assumption that each of us has a different pain threshold and that, moreover, this can vary depending on the area of the body. In any case, the short answer to this question is that yes, electric hair removal is painful, but we can also say that everything is absolutely bearable and over time the pain decreases.

The first few times are usually painful. However, there are tricks to make them more bearable. To begin with, we recommend that you exfoliate your skin to remove dead cells before shaving. Also, try not to overgrow your hair before shaving, as short hair will be less painful to remove.

How is the skin prepared for electric hair removal?

As we mentioned, using an electric epilator is anything but complicated, so preparation for the procedure is minimal. In many ways it is even easier than waxing. To start shaving, all you have to do is turn on your device – obviously with the battery charged – and get started. Despite this, by following a few simple tips, hair removal will be even easier and less painful.

  • A warm shower or bath just before shaving will make the process much easier. On the one hand it will reduce friction, on the other hand it will dilate the pores of your skin making the extraction of hair easier.
  • A weekly exfoliation or, in the worst case, an hour before hair removal, will avoid the appearance of ingrown hair. In this way, moreover, the hair removal will last longer.
  • To get good results, the hair should be about three millimeters long. Avoid growing them more, otherwise the hair removal will be more painful.
  • After hair removal it is good to moisturize the affected area. Although electric epilators do not particularly irritate the skin, this will calm the pain and keep potential redness at bay.

Is electric hair removal better or laser hair removal?

Many people tend to confuse these two techniques, but they are actually very different. Unlike electric hair removal, laser hair removal is a permanent method. Electric hair removal has the advantage of being cheaper and can be done at home. Choosing one or the other depends on your situation and your personal tastes.

How do you clean electric epilators?

It is recommended to clean the electric epilator after each use, without exception, as hair can get trapped between the head clamps. Not only is it unhygienic, but if a large amount of hair accumulates, the operation of the head, or even the motor, of the epilator could be compromised.

For starters, if plugged in, unplug the epilator from the power outlet. Next, move the head and start cleaning it with a brush. Many machines have their own brush, but you can also use a toothbrush or nail brush. The heads of the epilator are water resistant and can be immersed or placed under the tap for greater cleaning convenience.

Does electric hair removal have any contraindications?

Electric epilators, as a rule, do not involve any risk. Still, people with particularly sensitive skin may experience episodes of redness, irritation, or ingrown hair. Although these are annoying problems, they are easily solved through immediate hydration after treatment or a previous exfoliation.

Skin infections are very rare and almost always associated with using a machine in unsanitary conditions. Remember that you will need to clean the heads after each use. Don’t forget that epilators are electrical devices, so avoid using your machine while in the shower if it wasn’t designed for this type of use.
